People living with mild to moderate aplastic anemia are in serious condition but do not have to be hospitalized for treatment. With extremely low counts of all types of blood cells, the disease is considered severe and life-threatening that hospitalization for treatment is immediately required.
Iron-deficiency anemia or hypochromic anemia has three main causes:
Lack of iron in the diet, frequently occurring in children under 2 or in people on highly restricted diets.
Bleeding, which depletes the number of red blood cells in the body. Women, who have heavy menses, are more prone to anemia than men. Men can become anemic and it is usually due to chronic blood loss, such as from a bleeding ulcer.
Inability to absorb iron, often occurring because part of the stomach or small intestine have been removed or an individual just simply suffers from malabsorption syndrome.

Other causes of anemia include certain cancers, pregnancy and pica (eating clay, etc.).Depending on the cause anemia, it is generally classified in three ways: excessive bleeding, increased red blood cell destruction or decreased red blood cell production.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Anemia
Ayurvedic treatment of aplastic anemia is basically directed at treating the immune dysfunction and improving normal bone marrow production. Immuno-modulatory herbal medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Nagbala (Sida humilis), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) are used.
Medicines like Arogya Vardhini, Punarnavadi Mandur, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Laxadi Guggulu, Laghu- Malini-Vasant, Madhu-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Heerak Bhasma and Abhrak Bhasma are used to stimulate the bone marrow function. In addition, medicines which act on the “Rakta” and “Majja” dhatus (tissues) of the body are also used, as these again act on the metabolism regulating bone marrow production. These medicines include Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Guduchi and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis).
Herbal Ingredients That Aid In Treating Anemia
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) root or leaf, burdock (Arctium lappa), and yellowdock are herbs that have historically been used to strengthen and cleanse the blood. These herbs are helpful in bringing hemoglobin levels back to their normal range, for mild cases of anemia. Standard dosage is 1 tbs. per cup of water, and simmer roots for 20. An individual may utilize a single herb, or use a combination of these four herbs.
Food for Iron Deficiency
Natural food items for iron deficient anemia control – organic milk, pomegranate, sesame seeds, black grape fruit and ghee. One can use triphala as a mild laxative. Other Ayurvedic herbs for quick rebuild include Asparagus racemosus, saffron and punarnava can offer quick cure to anemia.
Leafy vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, turnip greens, spinach, collards), legumes (beans, green peas, peas), walnuts, cashew nuts, raisins, peanut, egg and seafood like sardines, shrimp, etc are rich sources of iron and especially beneficial in healing iron deficient anemia.
